Side Trips and Camping

On my little journey I am going on, I have decided to do some camping also. I am currently planning on camping at Cave Lake, and in the Great Basin National Park.

I plan on making a side trip to see the town of Bodie, Ca and also get my Highway 50 book stamped so I can get my certificate saying I drove the “Loneliest Road in America”.

3rd Mod: 255/75/17 Goodyear MTRs with Kevlar

Now that my 4Runner was lifted, I had to get some decent off-road tires on it. After much research and websurfing. I decided to go with a 255/75/17 tire for my 4Runner. The reasons I did this was simple.

  1. The spare tire would still fit in the stock location
  2. I would not need to run wheel spacers
  3. No trimming required.
  4. The tires are a 32 inch tire which is good enough for the places I plan to take my 4Runner.

1st Mod to my 05 4Runner (Project:Seven2)

Today I successfully compeleted my 1st Mod to my 05 4Runner (Project:Seven2). I replaced the Factory radio with a SCION (Pioneer) T1809 with iPod Connectivity. Since I hardly ever listen to the actual radio stations, and I have around 9000 songs on my iPod this made logically sense to me, especially since I got a deal on the radio (Thanks VenomHP).

Here is the original Unit still in the truck

I followed the directions from http://www.castulucci.com/projects/carpc/oemnaviaccess/ to remove the dash pieces so that I could get to the actual head unit.

After I got the dash pieces removed and the old head unit out. I then hooked up the new unit. I decided to use a METRA Ltd 40-UV43 Motorola Antenna Y-adapter and a Gm Micro/Delco Antenna Adapter to connect the dual antennas that Runner is equipped with into the back of the SCION radio, since it only has one.

I then set the head unit in place and bolted in place.

I then turned on the key and powered it on to make sure it worked and everything was hooked up. Wooohooo we have music and from the iPod even..

I then put the dash and everything back together. I was almost done, but I had to modfiy the tray that is underneathe AC Controls, as that is where I wanted the iPod to be. I had seen some people modify the AC Control panel, but I do not have that much faith in my dremal skills. I made the choice to cut an access place in the tray door. I figured if I messed it up, that would not be that much to replace.

Before

After

I very impressed with my dremel work, even though it was a Harbor Freight Special.

Here is the door in place with the cable.

iPod in its new home waiting to be used.

Everything buttoned back up and rocking!!

07-04-10 Amargosa and Around

Today my girlfriend and I took my “new” 2005 Toyota 4Runner out on a little road trip to see the Amargosa Opera House at Death Valley Junction. After there we then went to the Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge. It was the first time both of us to see it.

It was a a great look at how things live out in the middle of the desert. We then continued on to Pahrump and had lunch. After we ate, we then went to Sandy Valley via the dirt cutoff.  Next headed into Goodsprings and visited the Pioneer Saloon.

We then head back towards Vegas, and then decided to head to Nipton then Searchlight and then back to home.
